VAT and taxes

I will be direct: Quickshops will not file your taxes. You get lower platform fees and full Stripe ownership instead.

Quickshops is not Merchant of Record (MoR). Sales run through your Stripe account. You remain the legal seller for tax purposes unless you add tools like Stripe Tax with professional guidance. MoR platforms such as Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy charge higher platform fees partly because they handle tax collection and remittance on your behalf.

This page is orientation, not legal or tax advice. Talk to an accountant who knows digital products before you register, file, or enable tax automation.

At a glance

No hidden MoR fee

MoR platforms bake tax service into their cut. We do not.

Stripe Tax path

Many sellers enable Stripe Tax after talking to an accountant.

This page is orientation, not legal advice.

What Merchant of Record means

A Merchant of Record is the legal seller of record for a transaction. MoR platforms often handle VAT, GST, or sales tax collection and remittance in countries where they are registered. Gumroad states they act as MoR and manage sales tax worldwide as of January 2025. Lemon Squeezy markets similar coverage for global digital sales.

On Quickshops, you sell through Stripe Connect. You remain MoR. You decide tax registrations, invoicing, and whether to turn on Stripe Tax. That is the core tradeoff: more admin on your side, lower Quickshops platform fees on Pro.

EU digital goods (orientation only)

For B2C digital services and downloads in the EU, VAT is often due where the customer is located, not only where you live. Depending on volume and structure, you may need OSS registration or country-specific setups. Rules change and depend on your entity type, customer mix, and product category.

Do not treat a landing page as tax guidance. Talk to an accountant who has handled EU digital VAT before. I built Quickshops for sellers who accept that tradeoff in exchange for keeping more per sale on Pro when they already drive their own traffic.

Quickshops and tax tools

You are merchant of record

Sales run through your Stripe account. Tax registration and filing are your responsibility unless you add third-party tools or hire help.

Stripe Tax (optional)

Stripe can calculate and collect tax when enabled on your account. Availability and product coverage vary by region. Enable it only after you understand how it maps to your obligations.

Not a MoR platform

Quickshops does not remit VAT on your behalf like Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy. That is intentional—you pay lower platform fees on Pro instead of bundling tax service into the cut.

EU digital VAT basics

B2C digital sales in the EU often follow the buyer's country. Confirm rules, thresholds, and registration requirements with a professional before you scale cross-border.

When to pick MoR instead

MoR platforms make sense when tax admin would block you from selling globally at all, or when revenue is still small enough that higher fees beat hiring help.

  • You sell globally from day one and want zero tax admin.
  • You would rather pay higher platform fees than talk to an accountant.
  • Your revenue is still small and simplicity beats savings.

When revenue grows and you already drive your own traffic, owning Stripe plus 0% platform fees on Pro often wins on math. Run the numbers at your volume and read Quickshops vs Gumroad for fee context alongside tax tradeoffs.
